Reason # 247 I love the Mountain Goats

A completely ridiculous back catalogue that goes on forever and ever. Some time ago I was given every single album they ever released (or didn’t release) burned in audio and mp3 format. I pretty much put them aside, bar one or two, and have only really listened to albums as I bought them. Tonight I listened to New Asian Cinema for the first time and I have fallen in love with the song Korean Bird Paintings.

It’s all to do with loving lyrics that tell a story, and something about Brett Whiteley paintings. The paintings he did in Asia of Lyre Birds and other exotic animals. Also, it’s something about doing completely ridiculous things in a kind of retaliation against a situation that’s generally fucked up. I don’t know, whatever it is, it was love at first listen.

Tomorrow I drive to Wagga. I’m not really looking forward to getting there, but I always like the drive. New music to listen to on the way is cool too.

And hopefully my laptop will arrive on Monday! Fuckers.

There’s no tangible reason for it, and nothing you can put your finger on, but you know you’ve been there on some level before. When I first heard this song I got an aural sensation of déjà vu – and I’m not talking about familiar melody or similar lyrics here. I’m talking about common experience and a sense of empathy. I’ve previously written about this song giving me the same feeling I get when I look at the paintings of Brett Whiteley. Maybe that’s it? […]
