This which makes me sing.

In biting down on the great foam world,
What is the looming thing?
Not money, not flesh, not happiness,
But this which makes me sing.

Heartbeat and Sails – Augie March

There’s nothing I love more than listening to music. Second only to that is talking to other like-minded (or even not so like-minded) people about music and reading what others have to say about it. All these things take up an enormous amount of my time.

Recently I read the book 31 Songs by Nick Hornby. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who has been emotionally mowed down by a song. It’s some of the most unpretentious, humorous and honest pieces of writing about music that I’ve ever read. Anyway, regardless of all that, it inspired me to write about my own songs. The songs that have touched me and shaped me and made me the person I am today. It seemed like a good project, and well, I like a good project.

So here they are. I’m going to collect them all in one place. This is in no particular order by the way – the numbers are only really there so my head can keep up with how many I’ve done.

There is no upper limit. I initially told myself 20, but I will go until I feel like stopping. There are too many wonderful songs in the world to cap it.

Song 1: Gorecki – Lamb
Song 2: Love Rescue Me – U2
Song 3: The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us! – Sufjan Stevens
Song 4: Swan Dive – Ani DiFranco
Song 5: Korean Bird Paintings – the Mountain Goats
Song 6: About A Girl – Nirvana
Song 7: Reservations – Wilco
Song 8: Like Janis – Rodriguez
Song 9: I’ll Believe In Anything – Wolf Parade
